The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme has achieved a remarkable milestone by reaching over 12 crore farmers across the country. The scheme, which provides direct income support of ₹6,000 per year to eligible farmer families, has become one of the largest direct benefit transfer programs in the world.
Since its launch in 2019, the scheme has disbursed over ₹2.8 lakh crores directly to farmers' bank accounts. This direct transfer mechanism has eliminated intermediaries and ensured that benefits reach the intended beneficiaries without any leakage.
The Agriculture Minister highlighted that the scheme has been particularly beneficial for small and marginal farmers who constitute about 86% of the total farming community. "PM-KISAN has provided much-needed financial security to our farmers, enabling them to invest in better seeds, fertilizers, and farming equipment," the minister said.
The scheme has also been instrumental in promoting digital literacy among farmers. Many farmers have opened bank accounts for the first time and learned to use digital payment systems, contributing to financial inclusion.
