The Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has achieved a significant milestone by providing healthcare coverage to over 5 crore families across India. This makes it the world's largest government-funded health insurance scheme.
The scheme provides coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. Over 2.5 crore hospital admissions have been facilitated under the scheme, with total treatment costs exceeding ₹35,000 crores.
Rural areas have been the primary beneficiaries, with 70% of treatments provided in rural and semi-urban areas. The scheme has significantly reduced out-of-pocket healthcare expenses for vulnerable families.
The government has expanded the scheme to include additional treatments and has increased the network of empaneled hospitals. Telemedicine services have been integrated to provide remote consultations, especially beneficial during the pandemic.
